Can a Mormon...?

A few recent news articles and a poll are asking the question, "Can a Mormon be elected president?"

The answer is yes.

The real question is, are the American people (in spite of all the biased information they hear from the media) able to determine who is the best presidential candidate?

Yes again.

I personally have faith that a Mormon can be an excellent President of the United States. More importantly, I have faith that the American people have the ability to choose the best presidential candidate in 2008. Especially when one of the candidate's skills and abilities put him so far ahead of the rest of the pack.

I would have to completely agree with your assessment Mitch. It's amazing how many people are influenced by this biased news media about Mormonism. I've got to tell you, I am not a Mormon. I am actually a Presbyterian, however I support Mitt because of the many successes he's had while being the Governor of Massachusetts. I frankly don't care about his religion. It does have some quirky beliefs, however I'm not going to be judgmental. All I've seen is a caring, compassionate man with common sense and good morals and values. He's a great guy and I will support him until the end. Unfortunately, it looks like many other Republicans are doing much better, but I believe that once he voices his message for a new and better America, he will get the nomination.

Thanks very much for the comment. I think that it's a good thing that he's an underdog right now. He can only go uphill from here.

I heard on Fox news that Mormons can't drink, smoke, or dance. How will Mitt fit in around the DC scene socially? DC is very social and it is all about who you know and rub elbows with at these social events. What about the inaugural ball and all of the state dinners, etc he will need to host as president. What about going to other countries? How will dignitaries take to the new American Wall flower who can't socialize? And personally, I don't think America as a whole cares anymore about integrity religion or family values anymore. How many people do you know that actually attend a church or religious meeting regularly? Americans vote for president like they do for their favorite on American Idol, if they vote at all. Most can't be bothered by politics at all to spend a few minutes every few years to vote. Face it, that's the world we live in. Don't get me wrong, I would vote for Mitt Romney, but I think Mitt is up against too much to get the nomination. I think Guiliani (9-11 hero)will get the nomination with John McCain as VP. But I think Hillary and the dems will take the presidency in 08 and the country will go to hell from there. That is my prediction.

Having attended numerous LDS dances in my life for both singles and married couples, I honestly have no idea where the whole no dancing thing comes from. And it is not a new innovation either. Brigham Young encouraged dancing and was an avid square dancer himself.

While the non smoking and drinking is true, the dancing one needed some comment from an LDS person. I hope this was helpful.

So here is the deal,

Mitt and Ann Romney will no doubt be at many social events like they have for years. They will not smoke, but nobody does that anymore anyhow. They will be dancing on the floor and socializing at the tables, the only difference being in the beverage of choice in their glasses. How does this translate into wallflower?

I mean when you are socializing at parties and dances, do you really care what type of beverage the person next to you is drinking?

My feeling is that the socialization factor of the Mitt candidacy is a total non-issue, or actually it may be a positive one since he and his wife appear to be popular social butterflies.

Just one more post from me to bury the hatchet on the whole "mormons dont dance" issue. At the official Romney for President website there is a story mitt tells about courting his wife, and he talks about dancing with her at the high school prom. Hopefully a read of this article can dispel this myth once and for all.

As a group, we LDS folk certainly do have our quirks, but it never ceases to amaze me what some people try to attribute to us that is not even close to truth, especially coming from a source I have great respect for such as FOX news.

My hope is that the Mitt focus will tend to be directed at his platform and business abilities, and less about his ability to be a national sunday school teacher or something like that.

The outlook of this blog points out that conservatives in Washington think that Mitch: can't dance, has a cute family, (reminds him of car insurance:), and has a plan and values needed to be a good candidate for Washington and the country.

My comments are that these comments aren't wrong but go far off course from the real truth and direction of a forum such as this... Can Mitch prove to the state that he IS most in tune with their basic beliefs AND can the Romney campaign recruit Latter Day Saint devotion and grass level volunteerism.

In 2004, Washingtonians were awakened to the fact that they not only stood a chance in elections but were as strong as they ever were, since 1980. Here in Thurston county democrats were shaking at the thought that Republicans actually have a chance to gain ground and win over seats. ...they did.
This is important to the last blog I sent. Many Mormans were active in political campaigns and grass root drives and are still active in many levels of Republican AND Democrat party positions. They are most prominent in E. Washington but also in and around the main W.Wash cities.
Points to ponder: Washingtonians are theoretically more tolerant of differences of belief and background but prefer character and attention to their state's concerns; the diverse religious community in WA [as opposed to areas such as the south] have been exposed to LDS neighbors longer than most (est 1854) and are less likely to hastily denounce a rival conservative christian if that candidate is their best chance of gaining mutual beliefs represented in government; and Latter Day Saints are shameless self promoters and are very likely to be very visible in a state were they have a strong membership base (245,000).
